Rampant Seymour takes battle of Ballawley from Ó'Tuathail, O'Regan

He may have spoken recently about hanging up his racing wheels, but there was no sense of the departure lounge about Robin Seymour’s riding in south Dublin on Sunday.

The Team WORC man romped away with the third round of the Fixx Coffeehouse Supercross Series; coming home the winner in Ballawley by nearly two minutes.

The most decorated rider ever in Irish off road and a former road racing international, Seymour got a lightening quick start on a fine day for racing.

He whipped around the opening lap in a time of 5:57 and it was only junior rider and club mate Patrick Michel who could live with him in those early exchanges.

The teenager impressively held the master to within one second coming through the start-finish area to go out onto the second lap.

But that was as good as it got for anyone else over the remaining seven laps.

In hindsight the race was for second place after the first circuit.

Seymour put a staggering 16 and 17 seconds into eventual runner-up and third placed riders Sean Ó Tuathail of Bray Wheelers and Tim O’Regan of DID Dunboyne respectively.

And he then continually extended his lead on those nearest challengers, by more than 20 seconds on some of the circuits, during a ride that saw him quickest on every loop.

In the end, Seymour came home on his own some 1:50 clear.

The battle for 2nd and 3rd was a much closer affair, with Ó Tuathail prevailing by 19 seconds from O’Regan.

Peter McConville made the trip south a very worthwhile one; the Newry Wheelers man coming home in 4th place and taking the vets’ prize.

The junior prize went to the aforementioned Michel who was 6th on the day, some 2:43 down on Seymour after pushing him so closely on the opening lap.

That was a good ride for the teenager in a field of 77 riders, only 23 of whom escaped being lapped by the winner and completed all eight circuits.
