Robin Seymour has kicked off the new cyclocross season much in the same way as he finished the last one, with a dominant victory in the opening round of the ‘Fixx Coffeehouse Supercross Cup”.

At Grange Castle, Clondalkin, west Dublin, today the Team WORC rider and national champion was simply too good for the large field in the A race, relinquishing the lead in the very early stages but then finding a familiar rhythm that nobody else could match.

With a tailwind up the opening straight and a field of 50 riders lining out on the day, the start was frantic as the riders all galloped into the first gravel corner anxious to get a good position to build on.

The early stages saw Sean O'Tuathail (Bray Wheelers) taking charge, as he led for the first half of the opening lap. However, Seymour was never too far back and on the boards section the Team WORC veteran’s technique was simply too good, as he overtook the Bray man and led through the start-finish line after one lap to take the Fixx Coffeehouse prime.

Despite the recent rain, the course stayed in tact, with just one heavy section for the riders to contend with on the first day of the new winter season. Strong headwinds on the second half of the course meant being well positioned behind riders just in front was vital.

With Seymour continuing about his work from the second lap, the fast-starting O'Tuathail faded somewhat and began to be closed down by the strong men just behind namely Ryan Sherlock (Cycleways CC), Evan Ryan (Team WORC) and Stuart Galloway (Team WORC).

These were followed by the duo of Peter McConville (Newry) and Tim O’Regan (DID Dunboyne).

By the end of the second lap Sherlock had dropped those he was with and powered towards O'Tuathail, with the Cycleways CC man clearly carrying the form from his road season, where he was the strongest rider on the domestic scene this year.

However, Bray Wheelers’ O’Tuathail was clearly in good form today and he stayed with Sherlock for another four laps, until Sherlock’s power proved too relentless and he pulled away into a clear second place behind the flying leader Seymour.

The eventual winner gained time on the field on each of the nine laps, and by the time he took the flag for victory he was 1:38 up on second-placed Sherlock.

O'Tuathail lasted well after his fast start and came home in 3rd some 51 seconds adrift of Sherlock. O’Regan was next home in 4th 26 seconds later with Ryan next in 5th a further 21 seconds down while McConville was 6th some 28 seconds later.

First unplaced vet was Mark Pagnell (Team WORC) who has recently made a return from Canada.
