Seymour has too much class for O'Reilly in Glencullen

Robin Seymour proved his class yet again yesterday when he romped to victory in the Fixx Supercross Cup in Glencullen, an event promoted by Fixx Rouleurs.

The Olympian had a couple of seconds to spare on Paul O’Reilly of the host club with Gareth Hegarty (Scott-DLCO) taking third.

Despite a huge field signing on on a perfect day for racing Seymour, a 19-time national cyclo-cross champion, still showed he has the appetite for success and led from the front for much of the event.

The Scott-DLCO trio of Hegarty, Sean Feeney and David Vaughan kept Seymour honest while Anthony Doyle (VeloRevolution) was in contention for long spells before fading.

He still managed to take a fine fifth.

On the first lap of seven it was Feeney and Doyle who made the strongest start, with Ray O’Shaughnessy of Cuchulainn CC for company.

However, Seymour and O’Reilly were only marginally slower, though on the second lap the eventual winner would lose some time.

He round that lap in a time of 7mins 11secs, some 18 seconds slower that eventual runner-up O’Reilly.

But Seymour - as he so often does – showed his power and composure by proving quickest on ever lap after that apart from the final circuit when he eased back a little to savour his victory.

On lap 3 he put six seconds into the on-form O’Reilly followed by 10 seconds on lap four, two seconds on lap five and 11 seconds on the penultimate loop.

And while O’Reilly would claw back 11 seconds on the final circuit when Seymour eased back because he had the race won, the classy veteran still had a couple of seconds to spare at the end of the 48 minute contest.

Beth McCluskey was a comfortable winner of the women’s race; the Orwell Wheeler following up her recent success in the Ulster Cyclocross Series with another victory yesterday.

She had around two minutes to spare on runner-up Maeve O’Grady (Cycleways), with Caroline Murphy (Epic MTB) rounding out the podium.

Richard Barry (St Finbarr’s) took his first ever cyclocross win by edging Karl Connolly (Unattached) in the ‘B’ race while Hugh McMahon (Strata3-VeloRevolution) and Mark Murphy (Bray Wheelers) won the ‘B’ Vets and ‘B’ Super Vet races respectively.
