Seymour comes out on top at Crossmarnock; pressed hard by Ryan and O'Regan

The Fixx Coffeehouse Cyclocross Series may be over for this year, but that has not stopped overall winner Robin Seymour from continuing his 100 per cent winning run this year. He took the inaugural Portmarnock event in north Dublin yesterday.

The National Cyclocross Champion had his Team WORC colleague Evan Ryan for company for most of yesterday’s race. And Tim O’Regan pushed both off-road specialists very close, with that trio together for much of the race.

Run over 10 laps of the Paddy’s Hill course in the coastal suburb, the race took just over one hour for the three leading men.

Seymour got the fastest start but he by no means had it all his own way, with Ryan lapping faster than him on four of the ten laps, before Seymour prevailed by just four seconds at the finish.

O’Regan got a slow start, losing 28 seconds to Seymour and 23 to Ryan on the opening lap and leaving himself with an awful lot to do as a result.

A very strong road rider, O’Regan has continued to progress at ‘cross in recent months; a fact underlined by his lapping faster than both Seymour and Ryan on two laps in Portmarnock yesterday.

On the second lap he put 10 seconds into Seymour and again on the third circuit he pegged another three seconds back on the leader as he put the boot down to try and make up for his slow start.

But it was Seymour’s and Ryan’s consistency that saw them pull away, both lapping a few seconds faster than O’Regan over laps four through to 10.

O’Regan was never too far back though, and at the finish after 1hr 2mins of racing he was just 19 seconds down on Seymour and 15 down on Ryan. If he were to set his mind at the off road campaign again next year, the DID Dunboyne man may well challenge the Team WORC strongmen for some wins.

While the three leaders were very strong yesterday, the race behind for the minor places was a close one and took place just seconds behind the men contesting the podium places on a cold December morning on the east coast.

Mark Pagell from Team WORC took fourth and he was just 9 seconds down on O’Regan, while David O’Neill, also of Team WORC, was just a further 6 seconds back in fifth.

James Patrick Lattimore of South Dublin CC was the only other rider in the field to be credited with a time for all ten laps, with the rest of the field lapped by the front runners.

He was in 6th place and was 16 seconds down on O’Neill from Team WORC, with a total of 28 riders lining out in the A Race.
