Seth Dunwoody (Bahrain Victorious Development Team) has taken another strong result at Circuit des Ardennes (UCI.2.2) just weeks into his first season as an U23 after two stellar years as a junior rider.
The 18-year-old from Co Armagh took 11th place yesterday and went considerably better today as he took 3rd in the bunch sprint with the kind of finishing effort that should deliver wins this season.
Dunwoody finishing in the bunch today, which was sprinting for 3rd place behind solo winner Eirik Vang Aas (Team Coop-Repsol) and runner-up Joshua Gudnitz (Team ColoQuick), who also finished alone at 15 seconds.
Just six seconds after Aas crossed the line the bunch swept up the finishing straight to battle it out for 3rd place, Australian Brady Gilmore (Israel Premier Tech Academy) prevailing from Morten Aalling Nørtoft (Team ColoQuick) and then Dunwoody, who was 5th today.
At the end of the 171km stage, starting and finishing in Rethel and with 1,400m of elevation gain, all five Irish riders in the race finished in the bunch. Liam O'Brien (Lidl-Trek Future Racing), who is starting his season in France this week, was 87th.
Former Irish U23 road race champion, Jamie Meehan (AVC Aix Provence Dole) was 108th, with Adam Rafferty (Hagens Berman Jayco) 124th and Patrick Casey (Israel Premier Tech Academy) 128th.
Tomorrow, the race takes the riders 173km from Boulzicourt to Saint-Marceau, with a series of short and sharp climbs in the final third. That includes a 1.4km cat 2 climb, averaging 7.4 per cent, crested 6km from the finish and a 400m kicker, averaging 9.4 per cent, to the chequered flag, which may be enough for something of a GC shake-up.
