Seth Dunwoody (Bahrain Victorious Development Team) has gotten himself into the mix in a bunch sprint in Europe for the first time this season, with the 18-year-old looking like he is finding his feet already after stepping up from junior to U23 racing.
Though that transition to a completely new style of racing - with longer, faster events against strong rivals - is tricky, Dunwoody is clearly starting to adjust. He got himself into the fight at the front of the bunch in the final of the opening stage of Circuit des Ardennes (2.2) in France.
And while the Irish teenager will be looking for wins this year, in a bid to move quickly towards the pro ranks, today offers a very good baseline from which he can now hopefully kick on.
He finished the 133km stage into Nouvion-sur-Meuse in 11th place, on the same time as victor Patrick Boje Frydkjær (Lidl-Trek Future Racing), with Brady Gilmore (Israel Premier Tech Academy) 2nd and Antoine Raugel (Vélo Club Villefranche Beaujolais).
It was Dunwoody's sixth race day of the new campaign and after suffering some illness pre season, and hitting the deck since the campaign began, he now looks in better shape.
He was one of five Irish U23 riders in action on the opening stage, of five today, with three others also finishing in the bunch - Liam O'Brien (Lidl-Trek Future Racing) 90th, Jamie Meehan (AVC Aix Provence Dole) 92nd and Adam Rafferty (Hagens Berman Jayco) 93rd.
Patrick Casey, in his first season with Israel Premier Tech Academy, was 109th at 2:10 having been in team duties earlier for eventual stage runner-up Gilmore.
More to come.
