Stephanie Roche and Seán Nolan have gotten their Leinster Cyclocross Series campaigns off to a winning start with victories in 'Round 1' at Drewstown House, Kells, Co Meath, yesterday.
Nolan (EvoPro Racing) - who is coming back to racing condition after a very serious crash a couple of months ago - claimed the men's 'A Race' by over one minute from Joseph Mullen of Navan Road Club. Ronan O'Flynn of Orwell Wheelers rounded out the podium on the day.
In the women's race, Roche (Scott Bright Motor Group) claimed victory by just over one minute from Irish MTB XC champion Caoimhe May (Orwell Wheelers Cycling Club). Leah McCarthy (Team Giant Dublin) took 3rd place.
Roche and May got locked into a great battle at the front of the race for the opening two laps, of five, with nothing to separate them at that point. However, Roche then began to assert herself on the third lap, putting 16 seconds daylight between herself and May.
McCarthy was lapping a little slower that the eventual winner and runner-up but she was keeping herself in the contest and holding off Doireann Killeen (Orwell Wheelers Cycling Club) and Niamh Stephens (Team Giant Dublin) just behind her.
Up front, Roche turned the screw on the penultimate lap, adding more than 30 seconds to her advantage over May before extending that lead by another 17 seconds on the final lap; the winning margin adding up to 1:04 after almost 50 minutes of racing.
McCarthy was 3rd some 2:16 down on Roche, with Killeen in 4th at 2:55 and Stephens rounding out the top five at 3:48.
In the men's 'A Race', Nolan set his stall out early and never looked back. He was fastest on the opening lap of seven, pulling clear of Mullen and O'Flynn, with that duo immediately getting into a scrap for 2nd and 3rd behind the lone leader.
Once Nolan got clear out front he continued to press, gaining between a handful of seconds and about 25 seconds each lap on the two chasers to take what was a comfortable win in the end.
On the line, having extended his advantage on both Mullen and O'Flynn on every lap of the race, Nolan's winning margin was 1:20 over Mullen, who did enough on the final two laps to distance O'Flynn a little and make sure of 2nd place.
With O'Flynn rounding out the podium - some 1:49 down on Nolan and just 29 seconds off runner-up Mullen - Brian Melia of Team WORC took 4th place with Frank McDermott flying the flag for host club Oldcastle by putting in a good showing for 5th.
In the men's B Race, Dominik Drwal (Unattached Connacht) took victory by 18 seconds from Lukasz Oleksiewicz (Team WORC) with Ryan Dunne (IMBRC) 3rd at 28 seconds.
