Sean Downey (above) has taken his first result of the season, and arguably the best of his career, in Belgium today when he featured strongly in the scramble for the win at the Circuit de Wallonie, a UCI 1.2-ranked 170km race.
Downey was in a group of strongmen that pulled clear of the huge field in the closing stages, and while two riders slipped away to fight it out for the win, the An Post-Chainreaction rider was 3rd in the sprint from the breakaway just 10 seconds behind the winner to take an excellent 5th.
Downey told stickybottle just last week that he felt he had recovered well from the illness that had derailed him in the very early part of the season. He also said that in his second year now with An Post-Chainreaction in Belgium, he was more familiar with the racing and more in tune with what was needed to be in the hunt for placings and wins.

Today's 5th place comes on the back of a strong ride in the Zuid Oost Drenthe Classic (1.2) in Holland last weekend where he was 15th. He will be part of the An Post-Chainreaction team for the Rás, and will now go in to that race, where he was 11th overall two years back, full of confidence.
Irish rider Conor Dunne spent much of today’s race in the breakaway, going clear in a group that stayed away for around 150km before being caught with 10km remaining. While Downey got 5th, Peter Hawkins was also in the hunt, coming home in 15th place on the same time as the An Post man. Ronan McLaughlin was 89th today, while Ryan Mullen did not finish.
