Scully is top climber on Junior Tour of Ireland as Dodd wins stage 5

The Backstedt Bike Performance team took a 1-12 on stage 5 of the Junior Tour of Ireland into Ballyvaughan, Co Clare, today when Mattie Dodd took victory just five seconds ahead of the remains of the peloton. His team mate Ben Askey, who won stage 3 and holds the points classification lead, won the sprint from the chasing group for 2nd place.

Tom Pattinson (Halesowen Academy Mapei), who won the opening stage of the race, rounded out the podium on the day while Adam Gilsenan (Team Ireland) was 4th, Joore Wout (Tempo Hoppenbrouwers) was 5th and Travis Harkness (Cycling Ulster) placed 6th.

Conal Scully of Team Ireland was wearing the climbers' jersey today as the leader of that competition Andrew August (Hot Tubes) - who won stage 4 yesterday - was in the yellow jersey. However, Scully - the Irish junior TT champion - put in a great ride to win back that polka dot jersey.

He was first over two of the three Cat 1 climbs today; taking the maximum 12 points on the climb of Carron and on Corkscrew Hill while he was 2nd over the line atop the Cat 3 incline after 20km of today's 104.3km stage which started and finished in Ballyvaughan.

At the end of today's stage, the main field was whittle down to just 27 riders and ahead of tomorrow's final stage US rider August retains his race lead by 37 seconds ahead of former race leader Lucas Jowet, with his Backstedt Bike Performance team mate - and today's winner - Mattie Dodd 3rd at 48 seconds.
