Sandra Fitzgerald has followed up her win in the opening round of the Jay Daly Cycles National League the weekend before last with another victory last night in the opening race of the Orwell Ladies Crit League.

The league, which is sponsored by Wheelworx, got underway with a 5km time trial last evening starting at Johnny Fox’s Pub in Glencullen, Co Dublin.

Fitzgerald, a tandem pilot rider in the Paralympic team and the reigning European Police Road Race Champion, made it look easy, being the only rider of the 39-strong field to break 10 minutes.

Her time of 9:36 was 31 seconds ahead of Roisin Kennedy (Adamstown), with Monica Marconi of the promoting club Orwell Wheelers in third a further seven seconds adrift.

The next five rounds of the series will be made up of criteriums. These will be approximately 20-30 minutes long on a flat 800m circuit in Sandyford Industrial Estate on Tuesdays April 16th and 30th and May 14th, and on the purpose-built enclosed 1.2km circuit at Corkagh Park, Clondalkin on April 23rd and May 7th.

Sign-on is from 6.30pm at the Cosy Kitchen Café, Carmanhall Road, for the Sandyford rounds and trackside for the Corkagh Park rounds, with the first race start scheduled for 7pm.
The races are open to female riders of all fitness and ability levels including beginners, youths and juniors. The league is aimed at those interested in getting into racing for the first time and aims to improve riders’ fitness and bike handling as well as offering a competitive arena for more experienced women.
Separate A, B and youth races are planned for each circuit race, which will be handicapped based on ability. A rider’s best five out of six races will count towards the overall league standings.
