Sam Bennett has taken his second stage victory of Paris-Nice 2021, and the fifth win of his career on the 'Race to the Sun'.
The Deceuninck-QuickStep rider made the other sprinters in the field look very ordinary today; powerfully winning the race from the front after another fantastic lead-out from his team mates.
Bennett, wearing the green jersey today because points
classification leader Primoz Roglic (Jumbo Visma) was in yellow, hit the front
in the finishing straight and it was very clear nobody else was going to come
around him.
Indeed, though Nacer Bouhanni (Arkea Samsic) was on his wheel, the Frenchman made no effort to pass his Irish rival and was happy to take 2nd place in his wheel.
Pascal Ackermann of Bora-hansgrohe took 3rd place today,
in a sprint owned by the Bennett, who is now really at the top of his game.
Bennett had three of his team mates at the front of the
bunch as the final kilometre began, at the end of the 200.2km stage from Vienne to Bollène.
And when his last lead-out man, Michael Mørkøv, peeled away Bennett hit the front hard. The moment he pulled the trigger the stage honours were decided.
As today's stage 5 ended in a bunch sprint there was no major change in the overall ahead of the three final days in the mountains.
Roglic still holds onto his yellow jersey, by 31 seconds from Max Schachmann (Bora-hansgrohe), with Brandon McNulty (UAE-Team Emirates) in 3rd at 37 seconds.
More to come.
