After two stage wins from two at the Tour of Turkey, Sam Bennett was denied a third victory today.
Sam Bennett has finished 3rd in the bunch sprint that settled stage 3 of the Tour of Turkey today.
The Bora-hansgrohe man was beaten to the line by Fabio Jakobsen of Deceuninck-QuickStep.
Bennett claimed the runner-up spot and retains his race lead while Mark Cavendish of Dimension Data got up for 3rd; a welcome sight after being hit by a prolonged illness.
Caleb Ewan of Lotto-Soudal claimed 4th place, with Bennett taking his wheel just before the finish line.
The Irish rider opted to begin his sprint a long way back; following Ewan as he moved up through the bunch as Deceuninck-QuickStep dominated the lead-out on the front.
Just as Bennett looked to be moving into a perfect position into the headwind, he was bumped heavily by the stage winners team mate Maximiliano Richeze.
That threw him off his stride at a vital moment. However, Jakobsen hit the front and looked very strong, despite collecting a flag from the roadside in his handlebar.
The 122.6km stage from Çanakkale to Edremit came down to a bunch sprint after the last of the early breakaway was swept up with just over 10km remaining.
More to come.
