Having already taken 3rd place on the second stage of Tirreno-Adriatico, Sam Bennett has come through the mountains - not to mention the snow and rain - to take another top 10 placing on today's sixth and penultimate stage.

The Irish man, riding for ProContinental team Bora-Argon 18, was 8th in the dash to the line from a much reduced peloton on the 21okm leg from Rieti to Porto Sant Elpidio.

The stage was won by Tinkoff-Saxo's Peter Sagan, who was taking his first victory of the season.

Stage honours were decided in the rain after the early breakaway and some late attacks were snuffed out by the sprinters' teams.

Bennett appears to be in good condition after battling the mountains and very bad weather since his 3rd place on stage 2.

And while Bennett would have wanted a better showing at the finish, the fact he is in the hunt for victory after such a hard week bodes well for his major goals later in the season, which will include the Tour de France.

Bennett has already beaten Sagan sprinting this season and can take heart from the fact that a big win can only be around the corner, having already won the final stage of the Tour of Qatar this year.

Tirreno-Adriatico concludes tomorrow with a 10km pan flat time trial.

Queen stage winner Nairo Quintana (Movistar) holds a 39 second lead over Bauke Mollema (Trek Factory Racing), with Rigoberto Uran (Etixx - Quick-Step) a further nine seconds back.
