Sam Bennett secures historic jersey for the Irish at Tour de France | Video

Wout van Aert wins stage 5 of the Tour de France. Irish champion Sam Bennett, left, was 3rd and takes the green points jersey

Sam Bennett may have been denied his first career Tour de France stage win today but he still did very well on the 183km road from Gap to Privas on the fifth day of the race.

The Carrick-on-Suir man secured the green jersey for his efforts in the final sprint, when he finished 3rd, and in winning the intermediate sprint mid-stage.

Bennett made a nice piece of history today as he is the first Irishman to take a jersey at the Tour de France since Sean Kelly last won the green jersey into Paris back in 1989, the last of his four wins in that classification.

Today's stage was won by Wout van Aert (Jumbo Visma) in a bunch sprint from Cess Bol (Team Sunweb).

Ireland's Bennett was next and then Peter Sagan of Bora-hansgrohe, the rider the Irishman takes the green jersey from.

Bennett finished very fast but on a challenging finish, which was uphill and came after a technical final kilometre, he looked as if he left his effort a little too late.

Dan Martin (Israel Start Up Nation) and Nicolas Roche (Team
Sunweb) both lost time today on what was an undulating final section of the
stage.

Martin was 137th at 4:50 and it appears he is still being
hampered after fracturing a bone in his back last month. Roche finished in 169th
at 7:04.

More to come.
