Sam Bennett loses his stage 9 win for this move in Vuelta sprint | Video

Sam Bennett and Emils Liepins go shoulder to shoulder, with Bennett losing his stage win as a result

Sam Bennett has lost his stage 9 win at La Vuelta after being relegated in the result for what was judged an improper move.

This overhead footage, below, has emerged showing Bennett coming shoulder-to-shoulder with Emils Liepins (Trek-Segafredo).

Bennett was trying to protect his place in the line behind his team mates but the judges have decided the move against Liepins was improper and so Bennett has lost his stage win.

Pascal Ackermann of Bora-hansgrohe - who was 2nd across the finish line today behind the Irishman - has been moved up to stage victory.

The decision looks like a harsh one as the movement between Bennett (Deceuninck-QuickStep) and Liepins looked like it was well within the cut a thrust of pro sprinting.

After the stage in an interview - recorded before he knew he had been relegated to last place in the bunch - Bennett said he was delighted with his win given there were efforts made to push him into the barriers.

"It was a big fight," he said. "We'd some guys nearly put us in the barriers trying to take the wheel... it was a bit sketchy but we stayed upright."

More to come.
