Sam Bennett’s efforts to extend his brilliant run of results
this season at the Belgian semi classic Scheldeprijs has not been successful today
but the Irish rider will be happy to have emerged in one piece.
As Bennett was shaping up to launch his final kick for
the finish line at the end of 173km of racing a very nasty crash occurred just
behind him.
Bennett narrowly avoided the fall and though he was just
behind Caleb Ewan (Lotto-Soudal) at the time, and so had a great position, the
crash and being blocked by riders just ahead of him meant Bennett lost
momentum, though he did not fall.
Ewan went on to win the sprint, taking the victory very comfortably, with Bennett back in 8th place.
Pascal Ackermann (Bora-hansgrohe) took 2nd place and Niccolò Bonifazio (Total Direct Energie) was next, though Ackermann was later disqualified for the manner of his sprint.
The crash occurred when a August Jensen's (Riwal Securitas Cycling Team) front wheel clipped Ackermann’s rear wheel as the German had moved around to make space for himself to get a clear run at the line.
After the first faller went down others followed, with one of the Bahrain McLaren team hitting the road especially hard.
Bora-hansgrohe's Rudi Selig saw the riders crashing heavily and stopped to go to their aid by running back to them; a great show of sportsmanship.
Bennett (Deceuninck-QuickStep) returned to racing at last
weekend’s Gent Wevelgem following his post-Tour de France break, and was today
named in his team’s line-up for La Vuelta.
His outings on Sunday and today will have blown away any cobwebs from his break after the Tour and have effectively begun his tune-up for La Vuelta.
