Sam Bennett has gotten up in his first race of the season on the Spanish island of Mallorca, which ended in a sprint from a depleted peloton won by Matteo Pelucchi of IAM Cycling, seen above in action last year.
Ireland's Sam Bennett has gotten his 2015 season off to a solid start, taking 10th place the mass bunch sprint that decided the Trofeo Santanyi-Ses Salines-Campos in Spain today.
The 176km event came down to a sprint from a depleted peloton after Damien Garcia (Team Froy-Oslo) and Alex Kirsch (CULT Energy) took off shortly after the start.
They worked well together and built a lead that went over 11 minutes at one point.
However, with just two of them in the move and several sprinters’ teams looking for a result, their recapture seemed inevitable.
Kirsch would drop Garcia and press on alone, though he was caught just inside the 25kms to go banner.
From that point the sprinters’ teams took control, with Matteo Pelucchi (IAM Cycling) winning from Elia Viviani (Team Sky) and Jose Joaquin Rojas (Movistar).
The race formed part of the Mallorca Challenge series, the remaining events of which will be run in coming days.
