Sam Bennett only has to finish the final stage of the Tour de France in Paris today to win the green jersey after claiming more points at the intermediate sprint.
A four-man group was off the front for the sprint and when Bennett claimed 5th, or 1st of the bunch behind, and gained more points it meant it became mathematically impossible for any of his rivals to catch him.
It is the first time since Sean Kelly won his fourth green jersey in 1989 that an Irish cyclist has won a classification at the Tour, with Bennett also winning stage 10.
Even if Bennett did not place at the finish and his nearest rival Peter Sagan (Bora-hansgrohe) won the stage, Sagan would gain 50 points and that would not be enough to overhaul Bennett.
The final stage was still underway at the time of writing and we'll have lots more later.
