Confusion on the final corner may have royally messed up Sam Bennett, but he had very positive things to say about his own form after the race.
With just days to go before the Giro d’Italia gets underway Sam Bennett lost the chance of a confidence-boosting win at Eschborn-Frankfurt.
The 212.5km WorldTour race came down to a bunch sprint despite plenty of aggression.
Bennett (Bora-hansgrohe) looked ideally placed just as the final kick for the line was opening up.
He was second wheel and directly behind Fernando Gaviria as the QuickStep rider went from the front.
However, at the left turn just before the finish Gaviria hesitated for a moment and seemed unsure whether he should take the turn or continue straight.
That's how quickly a race can get away from you. Disappointed with the huge mistake in @DerRadklassiker, fully locking up to follow gaviria right instead of going left. Couldn't get back on top of the gear. But on the up-side the legs were amazing heading towards the #Giro101

Bennett was also clearly unsure and had to correct his line going around the corner. The confusion took Gaviria off the front of the group and out of the sprint.
And that meant Bennett was left to lead out the sprint a long way from the finish line. He was also unable to get back on top of the big gear he was in.
Alexander Kristoff (UAE Team Emirates) took victory ahead of Michael Matthews (Team Sunweb).
And Oliver Naesen (Ag2r-La Mondiale) rounded out the podium on a day when the last of the breakaway men were caught with just 3km remaining.
It's three in a row for @Kristoff87! ???
