Elia Viviani wins Giro stage 13: Sam Bennett had to settle for 2nd place behind Elia Viviani on stage 13 of Giro d’Italia.
Elia Viviani sprints to win stage 13 Giro d’Italia 2018
Exactly one week after taking his first ever Grand Tour win, Sam Bennett has just missed out on his third.
He took 2nd on today’s stage 13 of the Giro d’Italia after 180km from Ferrara to Nervesa della Battaglia.
Victory went to Elia Viviani; the Italian winning his third stage in the colours of QuickStep since the race began two weeks ago.
Bennett was hopeful of winning today having claimed yesterday’s stage 12 into Imola. And last Friday he won stage 7 into Praia a Mare.
While disappointed with 2nd today, he has emulated Irish greats like Shay Elliott, Martin Earley and Stephen Roche by winning a stage on this Giro.
In truth, he was well beaten by Viviani today; the victor getting his sprint underway first and also taking the tightest line along the left of the crowd control barriers.
Sam Bennett (Bora-hansgrohe) seemed to start his final kick quite far back. In the end he did well to get 2nd after impressively making up ground.
Danny van Poppel (LottoNL-Jumbo) rounded out the podium on the day, which saw no change in the overall.
Simon Yates (Mitchelton-Scott) retains the race lead ahead of what should be a spectacular day weekend in the mountains.
Ryan Mullen (Trek-Segafredo) and Nicolas Roche (BMC Racing) both finished in the bunch today; in 47th and 86th respectively.
