Sam Bennett has taken his second victory of the season after proving fastest in the big bunch sprint that ended stage 6 of UAE Tour today.
At the end of the 165km stage from Deira Island to Palm Jumeirah, Bennett was too fast for his rivals and took his second win having already won stage 4 on Wednesday.
In the finale today, Deceuninck-QuickStep once again worked to expertly bring Bennett and his lead-out man Michael Mørkøv close to the front of the bunch.
Mørkøv then dropped Bennett off, with apparent ease, on the front with a few hundred metres remaining before the Irishman pulled the trigger and demolished the sprint to win it comfortably.
Elia Viviani (Cofidis) was 2nd today and while the Italian managed to close up on Bennett as the line approached the Irishman’s speed and strength were too much to handle.
Pascal Ackermann (Bora-hansgrohe) was 3rd and Jumbo Visma’s new young sprinter David Decker was up there again; taking 4th place today having already taken two 2nd places on this race.
Then came Fernando Gaviria (UAE-Team
Emirates) in 5th and Giacomo Nizzolo (Qhubeka ASSOS); the European
champion rounding out a quality top six on the day.
More to come.
