Sam Bennett congratulated Álvaro José Hodeg (Deceuninck
-QuickStep) on beating him to win stage 5 of the BinckBank Tour today but was
critical of the lay-out at the finish.
The crowd control barriers came out into the road,
narrowing it for the riders, about 200 metres before the line.
Bennett had no complaints about being beaten by Hodeg in
the bunch sprint after 191.4km into Venray.
But it was clear from the footage the lay-out meant the
Irish Bora-hansgrohe rider had to pause behind the Colombian for longer than he
wanted.
In the end, while Bennett did not mention it, that moment
of hesitation probably cost him his
fourth victory in five days.
“First of all, congratulations to Alvaro Hodeg; super
sprint,” Sam Bennett said as he shared a video of the sprint.
“Secondly, I'd love to know the thought process behind
those barriers before 200m to go.
“This sport is dangerous enough, we race above 60kmh in a
final like this. It is not acceptable.
“CPA Cycling, time
to show your presence,” he said of the pro riders union that is supposed
to raise their concerns and represent them.
Bennett won the opening three stages in the race before
losing the race lead yesterday. It was taken by Tim Wellens (Lotto-Soudal) who
won yesterday’s stage as the field split to pieces.
