Video: On-fire Sam Bennett sprints in again for tenth win of dream season

Sam Bennett says he's not the fastest man in the race but he has done a pretty convincing impersonation so far; two wins from two for the Irish sprinter at the BinckBank Tour in Belgium

Just 24 hours after winning the opening stage of the BinckBank Tour in Belgium Sam Bennett has done it again; claiming stage 2 today in the race leader’s jersey.

Jasper
Philipsen (UAE-Team Emirates) was 2nd
with Dylan Groenewegen (Jumbo-Visma)
in 3rd place.

Kristoffer
Halvorsen (Team Ineos) came through
late for 4th place with Álvaro José Hodeg (Deceuninck-QuickStep) in 5th.

“I’m delighted with that, I really didn’t think I
could get a second win today,” Sam Bennett said after his win, adding he had
not felt very good getting the stage.

“But I’m getting greedy so I want another win here; get through this race well and on to the Vuelta.”

Today’s
169.1km stage from Blankenberge to Ardooie followed a similar pattern to
yesterday’s opener; an early breakaway going clear and lasting for a long time
but ultimately being caught.

The
last of the escapees was reeled in with just over 5km remaining. And once they
were caught the sprinters’ teams took over.

Sam
Bennett (Bora-hansgrohe) was to the fore in the bunch, remaining in about the
first 15 to 20 riders, as the finished neared.

With Jumbo-Visma hitting the front with about
3km to go to try and set up Dylan Groenewegen, the last few kilometres were
frantic.

However, Bennett remained fixed to the wheels
of the Jumbo-Visma lead-out train; clearly intent on coming off it to win as he
did yesterday in the rain.

It
was then Trek-Segafredo of yesterday’s runner-up Edward Theuns who took it up.

But
they hit the front too early and quickly faded as Jumbo Visma and UAE Team
Emirates took over in the final kilometre.

Bennett
then jumped from the wheel of Groenewegen onto the back
wheel of Philipsen from UAE Team Emirates when it became clear he was faster.

And
once he got a clear run at the line it was all over; Sam Bennett looking very comfortable
crossing the line celebrating his win.

More to come.
