Ryan Sherlock made the most of a weekend break from racing in Belgium to take victory at the Boyne Grand Prix in Slane today.

Riding for the Belgian based Tomacc Racing Team, Sherlock was part of a 16 strong group that went clear on the first of eight laps but with little co-operation in the break, decided to attack the group shortly afterwards.

With six and a half laps remaining, the only one brave enough to go with the former mountain bike champion was last week's Newbridge Grand Prix winner Greg Swinand of UCD.

The duo worked well together for the remainder of the race and held a minute and a half advantage over a four man chase group going out onto the circuit for the last time.

At the finish, the fresher Sherlock easily won the sprint to the line to take his first victory of the season.

Newry's Cormac Clarke led home the chasers, beating Sean Lacey of Aqua Blue to third place with Marc Potts of Omagh rounding out the top five.
