Classy Ryan Mullen blasts home for first major pro victory

In the colours of the Irish champion, 23-year-old Ryan Mullen has taken by far the biggest win of his career. It was his first international pro victory and he proved absolutely unbeatable. Above, on his way to time trial victory at the Vuelta San Juan in Argentina.

Irish road and TT champion Ryan Mullen has rocketed home to take stage 3 of the Vuelta a San Juan Internacional (2.1) in Argentina.

The 23-year-old Trek-Segafredo rider was unbeatable in the 14.4km pan flat TT in San Juan.

His time of 17:43 was a significant 25 seconds ahead of Filippo Ganna (UAE Team Emirates). Rafal Majka (Bora-hansgrohe) was 3rd a further five seconds back.

It was Ryan Mullen’s first international win since turning professional. His other victories to date include the Irish road and TT titles.

Mullen would finish in 112th yesterday, some 2:45 down on stage winner Roman Villalobos (Canel's Specialized).

However, relinquishing time and keeping his powder as dry as possible after a late puncture proved a wise move for the TT specialist.

He has now taken his first win with his new team in just his third outing in its colours.

The opening stage of the race on Sunday was won in a bunch sprint by Fernando Gaviria (QuickStep).

Ryan Mullen was 18th on the same time as the Colombian.

But the TT stage today clearly represented his best chance; a great opportunity he has now converted in some style.

Today's runner-up Ganna leads overall from Majka.
