Mullen is Irish TT champ as Dunbar and amateur McAuley also medal

Ryan Mullen has retained the Irish elite TT title that he has made his own in recent years.

He has won the 2019 title race at the National Road Championships in Donegal this evening.

The world class tester claimed the gold medal ahead of Irish cycling's rapidly rising star Eddie Dunbar. The Team Ineos man took silver.

And coming home in 3rd place was a rider who has now fulfilled the promise he has shown for years; the classy young amateur Craig McAuley.

The Caldwell Cycles Omagh athlete has been one of the best riders in the country in recent seasons.

And he has now put together a terrific performance on one of Irish cycling's biggest stages to share the elite men's podium with two WordTour riders.

Though Ryan Mullen is just 24 years old he already has 12 national titles on the road in his palmares.

He has now been elite TT champion four times, has two elite road race titles, three U23 TT titles, two junior TT titles and one junior road race crown.

Today he stopped the clock in a time of 50:24 for the
41.48km course, some 52 seconds up on Dunbar and 3:25 up on McAuley.

Spare a thought for one of the men of the domestic season so far, Lindsay Watson of Powerhouse Sport.

He was 4th in the elite men’s race in a time of 54:03, just four seconds off bronze after almost an hour of racing.
