Ryan Mullen was in the hot seat for over three hours, though Rohan Dennis (above) would eventually take the win.

Ryan Mullen career-best WorldTour result

Ryan Mullen has taken his best result in a WorldTour race this afternoon, at the Tour de Suisse.

The Cannondale-Drapac man took 8th in the opening 6km TT in Cham.

Today’s test was won by Rohan Dennis with a time of 6:24. The BMC Racing man was eight seconds ahead of team mate Stefan Küng.

Rounding out the podium a further second back was Mathias Brändle of Trek-Segafredo.

Then came Michael Matthews of Sunweb and his team mate and Giro d’Italia winner Tom Dumoulin.

Brändle, Matthews and Dumoulin were all on the same time; 9 seconds down on flying Australian TT champion Dennis.

There are a total of three Irish riders in the field for the week-long race. Conor Dunne is riding for Aqua Blue Sport and Philip Deignan for Team Sky.

Deignan was 103rd today at 38secs and Dunne was 110th at 39secs.

Neither would have been too concerned with their time today. Dunne will look to go on the attack at this race and can climb well.

And Deignan is also looking to ride as well on the climbs as he did at the Giro.

Ryan Mullen seeking consistency

Mullen took 5th in the elite TT at the World Road Championships last year but has said his goal is now consistency.

And having taken his first top 10 for his trade team in a WorldTour race at Tirreno Adriatico earlier this year he now has another to add to the collection.

Still aged just 22 years, he will look to make a regular habit of these kind of results and then  hopefully press for the podium.
