Ryan Mullen looked strong until a crash forced him out of the points race at the UCI World Cup in Mexico earlier today; seen here riding the Nations Cup for Ireland last year.
Ryan Mullen’s first ever race at a UCI World Cup did not go as he would have hoped, with the Irish international forced out of the points race by a crash in Mexico.
The UK-based teenager, who has recently signed for An Post-Chainreaction from the now defunct IG Sigma Sport, came down at the halfway point in the race in Guadalajara in the early hours of this morning Irish time.
Cycling Ireland head coach Brian Nugent said he felt Mullen, a double bronze medalist at the European U23 Track Championships last summer, looked good and was by no means struggling with the pace when his race came to an end.
“Ryan had a difficult debut at his first World Cup,” said Nugent.
“He was very comfortable with the pace, and was performing strong, but bad luck saw him crash out of the race at half distance. He’s patched up and looking forward to the pursuit in the morning.”
Mullen will be competing in the qualifying rounds of the individual pursuit later today, Saturday.
A world class rider against the watch, Mullen won a silver medal in the time trial event at the European U23 Road Championships in 2012. His is the national U23 time trial champion and last September was 7th in the U23 time trial at the World Road Championships in Florence, Italy.
At the Europeans in Portugal last year Mullen won bronze Medals in the pursuit and scratch race and broke the 4km pursuit stadium record at Sundrive Rd track in Dublin by 10 seconds last summer.
