The An Post-Sean Kelly squad had a rough day at the Dwars door Vlaanderen semi classic in Belgium yesterday, with Gediminas Bagdonas the team’s only finisher.
The Lithuanian finished in what was effectively the main bunch, 3:06 after lone winner Niki Terpstra (Omega Pharma-Quickstep). The Dutch rider had earlier attacked the breakaway and ridden the final 20km alone to take a fine win.
His team mate Sylvain Chavanel topped what was a great day for his and Irish champion Matt Brammeier’s team by taking second.
Ireland’s Sean Downey was among those who abandoned. Brammeier, with his team work done for the day when the winning breakaway went, also took an early shower.
The 200km event took in a string of stinging cobbled climbs and boasted a field featuring the very biggest names in the sport including world champion Mark Cavendish (Team Sky), who crashed when he rode over a discarded Katusha bidon.
