Rory Townsend has retained his sprints
classification jersey at the Tour of Britain despite suffering a crash on today’s
stage.
The Irish rider competing for Canyon dhb p/b
Bloor Homes went on the attack on stages 1 and 3 and carried the jersey into
today’s fourth stage courtesy of the points he gained up the road.
While he did not score any points today, none
of the riders in the four-man escape group was close to him in the
classification this morning.
That means Townsend still leads the
competition on 17 points; from Dries de Bondt (Corendon Circus) on 13 points.
While Townsend crashed today and trailed home
in 105th place almost six minutes down he will wear the sprints
jersey into tomorrow’s TT.

Today’s 174km stage into Birkenhead was won by Dylan Groenewegen (Jumbo-Visma); his third win in five
stages.
Team GB rider
Matthew Walls (21) took a brilliant 2nd place with Matteo Trentin
(Mitchelton Scott) in 3rd place.
Trentin had started
the day just one second down on overall leader and yesterday’s winner Mathieu
van der Poel (Corendon Circus); the Italian taking back the leader’s jersey
today on time bonuses.
Ireland’s Eddie
Dunbar (Team Ineos) finished in the bunch, in 57th place, while
Conor Dunne (Israel Cycling Academy) was 84th at 2:11.
Tomorrow’s stage is
a 14.4km pan flat TT in Pershore
and should put real shape on the overall standings.
All eyes will be on
Van der Poel to see what he can do in his first TT since the start of last
season when he was 2nd in the prologue at Boucles de la Mayenne (2.1).
