Primož Roglič (Jumbo-Visma) dislocated his shoulder on stage 5 of the Tour de France today before popping it back in himself and continuing in the race.
He finished in 61st place on the stage in a group 2:59 down on stage winner Simon Clarke (Israel Premier Tech) but 2:08 down on the man he hoped to challenge for the final yellow jersey, Tour champion Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates).
Roglič was among several fallers in the finale, in a crashed caused when a number of them hit a haybale that appeared to have been accidentally shunted into their path by a passing TV motorbike.
The crash also took down Jack Haig, who is now out of the race. His Bahrain Victorious team said he has suffered "multiple non-displaced wrist fractures" as well as sustaining severe bruising and cuts, some of which required stitching.
Asked whether he had lost his chances of winning the race, Roglič said: "I haven't thought that far yet. I just have to recover first."
He explained that with about 30km to go he had fallen hard on his shoulder in the crash caused by the safety bale being shunted into the road, in the path of the thinned out peloton as they exited a roundabout.
"I then put my shoulder back in the socket myself," he added. "I couldn't do that on the road, so I sat in the seat of a spectator. It worked there. I know from experience what to do in such a situation, but of course it was not nice.
"It was very difficult after my fall, but we still did everything we could. Now we first have to see how I can continue in this Tour."
