Enjoying a strong end of season run despite being sidelined from the Vuelta due to illness, Nicolas Roche finished in the top 10 in the elite men’s TT at the European Road Championships in France today.
The test in Plumelec was won by Spain’s Jonathan Castroviejo who recorded a time of 58:13 for the 45.5km course, the gold coming after he took 4th in the Olympic TT last month.
Today he was 30 seconds ahead of silver medal winner Victor Campenaerts (Belgium), with Moreno Moser (Italy) a further nine seconds back to take bronze.
Roche came home in 8th place, some 1:14 down on the winner.
The only other Team Ireland rider in the race, Ryan Mullen was 22nd some 2:31 off the pace of the victor.
In the women’s race, the Netherlands took the title via Ellen Van Dijk. She posted a time of 36:41 over the 24.5km course.
She won by 18 seconds from team mate Anna Van Der Breggen who won the women’s Olympic road race and took bronze in the TT in Rio.
Van Dijk’s win will go a long way to making up for her missing out on bronze in the women’s TT in Rio.
There she veered off road into the ditch and lost vital time that almost certainly cost her a place on the podium.
Olga Zabelinskaya (Russia) found herself in the bronze medal position today, some 23 seconds down. She adds the bronze to her TT silver from Rio.
Irish national champion Anna Turvey was 24th in her first appearance in the green jersey.
She was 3:44 off the pace of the winner with young Josie Knight in 51st in the combine elite and U23 field. The Kerry woman was 6:38 down on the day.
And when the U23 result was compiled she was 25th in that classification, some 3:43 down on winner Anastasiia Iakovenko (Russia
