Nicolas Roche’s Team Sunweb clocked a very strong time in the TTT at the Tour de France today.
And they would have done ever better but for Roche and Wilco Kelderman suffered late mechanicals.
However, for Dan Martin’s UAE Team Emirates the result
was not so good and he has lost time to his rivals.
The Irish climbing ace is targeting the general
classification. And with more climbing and few TT kilometres than normal this
year, it’s a route suited to Martin.
However, the riders still had to face a TTT today in Brussels over 27.6km and time losses were the order of the day for Dan Martin.

Team Ineos were off first today because they were last
placed in the team classification following yesterday’s opening stage.
They set a time of 29:17 – some 56.551km per hour – that
lasted all day until Jumbo Visma smashed it at the end.
The Dutch squad won yesterday’s opener into Brussels via
Mike Teunissen (Jumbo-Visma). They demonstrated their strength in depth with a
masterful ride.
They were well ahead Team Ineos all along the route and
by the time they reached the finish with the yellow jersey in their ranks they
had put 20 seconds into Team Ineos.
To put that winning time in perspective, the margin of 20 seconds between Jumbo Visma and Team Ineos covered the teams 3rd to 10th place.

Nicolas Roche’s Team Sunweb came home in 5th place some
26 seconds down; on the same time as Katusha-Alpecin in 4th.
Roche finished some nine seconds down on his team mates
as a result of his problem late in the stage.
Dan Martin’s UAE Team Emirates were 16th of the 22 teams.
They were 1:03 down on Jumbo Visma and 43 seconds off Team Ineos.
The result means Mike Teunissen (Jumbo-Visma) holds his
yellow jersey and now leads overall by 10 seconds from the four team mates who
finished with him today.
That 10 seconds was his time bonus for winning stage 1
and his team mate Wout van Aert is now 2nd overall.
After the five Jumbo-Visma men overall comes four Team
Ineos riders, all at 30 seconds, with Geraint Thomas and Egan Bernal among
them.
The result puts Nicolas Roche in 40th place some 45
seconds down on Teunissen; though the Irishman says he is not targeting general
classification.
Dan Martin is now placed 92nd overall and 1:13 off yellow, not to mention 43 seconds down on Thomas and Bernal.
