Roche bows out of ‘Ag2r La Mondiale’ after last race at World Champs Team TT

The smiles say it all: Omega Pharma-Quick Step took the first ever trade team TT world title

Ireland’s Nicolas Roche ended his four-year tenure with French team Ag2r La Mondiale in Valkenburg, Holland, today when he was part of a six-man line-up at the World Team Time Trial Championships.

Roche will turn out again next Sunday at the World Road Race Championships for the Irish team and will then bow out for the year after a very long season in 2012. He has decided to forego a return to the Tour of Beijing, where he won a stage last year, and also the end-of-year Tour of Lombardy monument.

The Irishman joins the team of Vuelta winner Alberto Contador for next year, Saxo Bank-Tinkoff Bank, in a move that Irish fans will watch with keen interest.

Roche’s last ride for his French team today was a disappointing one, with the Ag2r La Mondiale riders coming home in 15th place of the 32 teams that lined out. They were 2:26 down on winners Omega Pharma-Quick Step.

BMC Racing pushed the Belgian squad very close, losing the title by just 3.23 seconds. Their US star Taylor Phinney faltered on the final climb of the Cauberg, with his team mates forced to wait for him a little. That stall and the time it took them to reform into their well-drilled shape almost certainly cost them gold.

It was an uncharacteristic moment of weakness from Phinney, who finished fourth in both the road race and TT at the Olympics and also wore the leaders pink jersey in this year’s Giro.

His situation was not helped today by the fact that Tejay Van Garderen went through far too hard just as Phinney had done a massive pull on the front, forcing those behind him to fan out, with Phinney having to dig very deep to hang on.

Orica GreenEdge were third today, some 47.06 seconds down on the winners.
