Off-road legend and double Olympian Robin Seymour took a convincing win in the final round of the Supercross Cup yesterday at Belmont Demesne, Co Wicklow.
The Team Worc man was over a minute clear of Paul
O’Reilly who was suffering a rare defeat in what has been his best cyclocross
season to date.
Niall Davis (Biking.ie) rounded out the podium, with Sean
Nolan (Navan RC), Richard Maes (Strata 3-VeloRevolution) and young Lee Harvey
(VC Glendale) completing what was a quality top six on the day.
O’Reilly got the better of the early exchanges, though
there was little to separate him from eventual winner Seymour, Nolan and Maes
on the opening lap of seven.
On the second lap O’Reilly continued to pile the pressure
on and opened a gap of about 10 seconds on Seymour with Nolan and Maes a little
further back.
However, a poorer ride by O’Reilly on the next two laps,
pitched against consistency from Seymour, saw the eventual winner pull clear on
his own.
And from that point Seymour kept the pressure on;
extending his lead each lap and winning it well in the end.
O’Reilly held onto his 2nd place as Davis came through
the field after a slow start to pick off Nolan and Maes for the final spot on
the podium.
In the women’s race, Lara Gillespie of UCD Cycling Club
continued her recent strong run and cemented her status as favourite for the
national championships in the New Year.
She got a very fast started in the women’s five-lap
contest and after the opening lap she was already 15 seconds up on Lisa
Stapelbroek (Kenmare CC).
From that point Gillespie led the race solo out front and
opened the gap further to the chasers each lap.
In the end she had over two minutes in had on runner-up
Grace Young (Strata 3-VeloRevolution).
Young recovered from a sluggish opening lap to catch and
pass Stapelbroek, who claimed 3rd place.
On the line Gillespie was 2:08 up on Young with Stapelbroek another 1:55 back.
