Robin Seymour has again claimed gold at a National Cyclocross Championships. The man who went to three Olympic Games, and who reigned in elite cyclocross for two decades in Ireland, today added the Masters 50 national title to the European crown he won in Belgium in November.
He claimed gold today ahead of Trevor Woods (All human-VeloRevolution) and Jason Henry (Inspired Cycling) at McCrystal Park in Jenkinstown, Co Louth.
While Colm McGarvey (EPIC MTB) was doing the best job of holding Seymour during the race, he suffered a mechanical and was forced to run with his bike over his shoulder to the pits. That unfortunate incident, on the third lap, saw McGarvey slide back the field. And while he soldiered on, he never caught sight of Seymour again and eventually finished in 8th place.
Seymour (Team Worc) won it well in the end, having 1:05 over silver medalist and former champion Woods, and it looked like he meant business from the gun. While McGarvey had fallen only four seconds behind Seymour after two laps of the four-lap race, the other riders contending for medals were a little further back.
Woods, for example, had given away 1:03 to Seymour before going out onto the final lap and eventual bronze medal man, Henry, was 1:35 back at that point of the title race. At the chequered flag, Seymour took another win in the Bellurgan Wheelers promotion by 1:05 from Woods with Henry 3rd at 1:35, having rounded the final lap in the same time as the winner.
Then came Declan McEntee (Emyvale CC), in 4th at 2:05, with Pierre Kinsella (Breffni Wheelers) in 5th at 2:08. Fearghal Regan (Kilcullen Cycling Club Murphy Geospacial) was 5th at 3:01.
In the Masters 60 race, Johnny McCabe (Cuchulainn CC) claimed the title by 1:33 from Paul Birchall (Verge Sport Pi Cycles) with Christopher McCann (Banbridge CC) in 3rd at 4:15; the leading trio the only riders in the field to finish on the same lap.
More to to come.
