Rising teenager James Curry has taken victory in round two of the Ulster Cyclocross League in Irvinestown, Co Fermanagh.
The 17-year-old Banbridge student saw off a brave challenge from Lewis Ferguson (North Down CC) at the end of the six-lap feature race promoted by Lakeland CC.
Curry had six seconds to spare on Ferguson after they, along with three others, broke away early on.
That quintet was completed by Graham Boyd (Xmtb McConvey Cycles), Darnell Moore (Caldwell Cycles Omagh) and Barry Kellett (Dromara CC), the latter taking the final spot on the podium.
On a perfect day for racing, upwards of 50 riders signed on for the main event and on a fast course it proved a very quick start, though Curry was always towards the front forcing the issue.
Eventually that group of five went clear and were never seen again before the finish.
Curry made his move on the final lap on the hardest section of the course and he held a gap of just a handful of seconds on Ferguson by the end, making up for his disappointing fourth place in lady Dixon Park last weekend.
Claire Oakley (Xmtb McConvey Cycles) was victorious in the women’s event with Gill Smith (Phoenix CC) and Martina Hawkins (Shimna Wheelers) next across the line.
The men’s ‘B’ race was easily the biggest in terms of participation and the honours there went to Nathan Mullan of Dromara Cycling Club.
He edged Paul Kelly (Four Masters CC) by just one second with henry O’Neill of Newry Wheelers some 22 seconds further back in third.
There were wins too for Cormac McLaughlin in the men's MTB race and Evan Bartley of promoting club Lakeland CC in the women's MTB race.
