Darragh O’Mahony proved he will be one to watch in the upcoming Junior Tour of Ireland after he won the Munster Road Race Championships in Blarney yesterday afternoon.
The O’Leary’s Stone Kanturk CC rider had almost a minute to spare on the remainder of the break that he attacked inside the final 10 kilometres in the combined junior and elite event.
The 10-lap, 100-kilometre, race was a well-attended affair, with prizes for the first three in each category.
But O’Mahony was keen to set his stall out from an early stage in pursuit of outright victory rather than simply the junior title.
He was in all the key selections, the main one featuring, among others: Eddie Barry (Moda Kingdom Endurance Sports), John Hodge (Dungarvan CC), Cathal Moynihan (Aquablue), Simon Tuomey (Cork Giant), Sean Yelverton (Mego Racing Team), Eoin O’Connell (Blarney CC) and Shane Kenny (Mego Racing Team).
Cathal Moynihan was second on the day and took home the A1 prize from Hodge and Barry as race winner O'Mahony was not eligible for that title as a junior.
Kenny captured the A2 title and Clinton O’Mahony of West Cork CC was the winner of the A3 section.
