Richie Maes has extended his lead in the Munster Cyclocross Series with victory in the third round in Ennis, Co Clare.

However, St Finbarr’s CC Richard Barry pushed the Killarney CC winner all the way on Sunday.

Maes had 10 seconds in hand on the finish line, though Barry was breathing down his neck ensuring the eventual winner could never relax.

Both men could not be separated on the opening of nine, though Maes pulled ahead on the second lap.

But those gains were wiped out on the third circuit. And once again on the fourth lap the duo out front could not be separated.

However, Maes put a not insignificant 15 seconds into Barry on the fifth lap and added a few more seconds on the next loop.

And while Barry kept fighting and closed the gap considerably over the last three laps, Maes had enough in hand to win.

Behind them, Michael Lucey of Strata 3-VeloRevolution rounded out the podium, some 1:37 down on the winner.
