Richie Barry, Grace Young take wins at Dungarvan Cyclocross

Richie Barry (St Finbarr's) kept Conor Hennebry (Dan Morrissey-MIG-Pactimo) at bay to claim victory in the men's 'A Race' at Dungarvan CC Cyclocross yesterday.

Young junior David McCarthy (Verge PI Cycles) put in a strong performance in the men's main event in Co Waterford to take the final place on the podium behind the more established elite riders.

Grace Young (All human-VeloRevolution), who has prolific for long periods on the domestic scene in recent years, claimed the women's race from Márcia Salvador (TC Racing).

In the men's race, run over five laps, eventual winner Barry got the best start, putting between seven and 12 seconds into his main rivals on the opening lap.

From that point he continued to grind out a relentless pace that saw him lead from gun to tape and build his advantage each lap over Hennebry; one of the best road riders in the country.

In the end, Barry had 1:46 to spare over Hennebry after around 45 minutes of racing, with McCarthy just 44 seconds behind the runner-up on the line.

The women's race followed a similar pattern to the men's race; eventual winner Young getting out front early and riding away from Salvador, with more than seven minutes between the winner and runner-up on the finish line.
