Aine Doherty of VC Glendale and Samuel Coleman of Shelbourne Orchard CC have won the U16 girls and boys races at the Youth National Cyclocross Championships at Palace Demesne, Armagh City, today.
In the Square Wheelers promotion, Doherty added to her national title in the girls race by winning the U16 gold for 2022 ahead of Aliyah Rafferty (Island Wheelers) and Greta Lawless (Team WORC).
Doherty, now a second-year U16, won the U15 road race and TT titles, and silver in the criterium, at the Youth National Road Championships in Gorey, Co Wexford, last August.
Today's runner-up, Rafferty, is a first-year U16 and she adds today's silver medal to the road race, TT and criterium silvers she claimed at the youth road champs last year. The winner of bronze today, Lawless, won the U16 girls race at Cross Clonmel back in October.
The new U16 boys national cyclocross champion, Coleman, adds his gold medal today to the golds he claimed in the U15 road race and TT, and silver in the U15 criterium, last year at the youth road champs.
Today he beat Conor Murphy and Joseph Mullen (Navan RC), who took silver and bronze respectively. Murphy of Rostrevor MTB, is the reigning U14 boys national TT and road champion.
The U14 girls title was won today by Aisha Gannon (Breffni Wheelers) from Emer Heverin (Kinning Cycles Cycling Club) and Ffion Dolan (Cuchulainn Cycling Club). The U14 boys title went to Curtis McKee (Scott Quanta Racing) from Hugh Og Mulhearne (Panduit Carrick Wheelers) and Rian McCrystal (Bellurgan Wheelers).
