Having been selected to ride on the Irish junior team for next month's Tour of the North, Conor Halvey has celebrated with a victory in Co Mayo.
The Nicolas Roche PT rider was best from the breakaway at the end of the opening stage of Rás Mhaigh Eo after 90km in the saddle.
Halvey, who previously rode for Errigal CC in Donegal, got the better of Alan Cawley (Galway Bay CC) and Donal OCionnfhaolaidh (UCD CC-Fitzcycles.ie) yesterday.
Just one further second back in 4th place was Jack Caldwell of Bikeworx. Aichlinn O Reilly (Newcastle West Cycling Club) was another two seconds back in 5th.

Eoin McLoughlin of Westport Covey Wheelers and Stephen Barry of Scott Orwell were next in 6th and 7th, some five seconds down on Conor Halvey.

Then there was a gap back to the bunch, with Daniel Logue (Foyle CC) leading in the peloton for 8th place some 39 seconds after the winner had taken the chequered flag.
It meant the seven who managed to get out of the bunch were in the driving seat going into the afternoon TT, the results of which were not available at the time of writing.
