Results Orwell Two Day Stage 2 | 16-rider group gains time in Wicklow

Matteo Cigala (Dan Morrissey Pactimo) has won stage 2 of the Orwell Two Day after he attacked late from a 16-rider group that gained time on the rest of the field after 80km of racing - 10 laps of an 8km circuit - from The Beehive, Co Wicklow.

Cigala, who has won some internationally renowned Gran Fondos in his native Italy in recent months, beat Joel Luke (UCD Cycling Club) in a two-up sprint for the stage win. However, former Irish criterium champion Andy Maguire (Team Stafford Bonded) led home the rest of the group just behind the two leaders, with no time gaps being recorded.

Conor Murnane of UCD Cycling Club was 4th, with junior international Adam Gilsenan (Club Ciclistico Canturino) 5th and Conor Kissane (Killarney Cycling Club) claiming 6th place.

However, this morning's 11km TT stage 1 winner, Paul Kennedy of Burren CC, was in the front group this afternoon, meaning he retains the yellow jersey. He leads by 38 seconds from junior Conal Scully (Carlow Road CC) with Niall McCarthy (McNally Swords) 3rd at 57 seconds.

Liam O'Brien (Fermoy CC), another junior rider and winner of the Kanturk Three Day earlier this year, is 4th at 1:16 while Nathan Mullan (Dromara CC) is 5th at 1:27.

While Cigala and Kennedy ended the day as stage winner and still race leader, they both initially missed the main breakaway of the day. However, they got across to that move by attacking on the climb on the penultimate lap and catching those ahead as the front group took the bell for the final lap.

On the final climb of the stage, Cigala made his move from the breakaway and managed to get clear with UCD CC’s Luke; beating him in the sprint for the victory, with the rest of the group right behind them.

In the women's race, the order of today's stage 2 - and the general standings after the stage - are the same as the stage 1 TT result; Jennifer Neenan (Sundrive Track Team) winning both stages and leading overall.

She has 19 points, with Autumn Collins (AWOL O'Shea) in 2nd place on 10 points and Katie Reilly (Orwell Wheelers Cycling Club) in 3rd on eight points with one stage remaining.
