Sharon Bird wins opening 8.8km TT at Newcastle West Stage Race

Sharon Bird of Ballymena Road Club has won the opening stage of the women's event at the Newcastle West Stage Race in Co Limerick today

Reigning Ulster hill climb champion Sharon Bird has taken the first victory of what promises to be a feast of racing in Co Limerick this weekend in the second round of the National Road Series.

The Ballymena Road Club rider was best in the 8.8km TT that got the women’s Newcastle West Stage Race underway this afternoon.

Bird, a very
strong rider who was 5th in the national road race championships on
a hilly course in Derry two years ago, won today’s stage by 3.8 seconds from
Becky Woods (All human-VeloRevolution).

podium some 9.3 seconds down on the winner.

And while the top
three on the day were covered by less than 10 seconds, the gaps after them were
much bigger, with significant gaps already having emerged down the field.

Emma Desmond
(Spellman Dublin Port) was 4th some 31.2 seconds down on Bird’s
winning time while Carthach McCarthy (Blarney CC) completed the top five, some
39 seconds down.

The women’s race got the weekend of racing underway and there are separate stage races for men – all events over four days. The men’s stage races were also getting started this evening, results to follow.
