Ruairi Byrne (UCD Cycling Club) has claimed another win in what has been the best season of his career; taking away the senior men's title at the National Hill Climb Championships in south Co Dublin today, full results below.
Byrne was best of the 20 finishers in the senior men's event and though the women's race was much smaller, with five starters, the championships were very well supported this year, despite the storm conditions forcing their rescheduling from yesterday to today, Sunday.
The women's title was won by Caoimhe May (Team WORC), who appears to be in good shape in time for the new cyclocross season, just as the road race action is winding down and many riders will take a break before getting stuck into 'cross.
May was best on the 3.47km climb, averaging eight per cent, in Glensamole, clocking a time of 13:00. She finished 29 secconds ahead of runner-up, Niamh O'Dwyer (Black House Racing). The women's bronze medal went to Jennifer Caverly (Unattached), at 1:58.
Like May in the women's race, the men's result also threw up evidence of pre-cyclocross form as it was junior rider, and cyclcross and MTB international, Ryan Daly (Scott Racing IRL) who pushed Byrne closest today.
Byrne, who was one of the riders of the road racing season on the domestic front, went up the climb in 9:38, with Ryan 15 seconds off that pace and looking like he is in great condition. Indeed, young Ryan scalped some of the top domestic riders today on his way to the senior silver medal.
Joel Luke made it a 1-3 in the senior men's event for the host club, UCD CC, and he was just six seconds off young Daly's time and 21 seconds down on winner Byrne.
And though Gareth O'Neill (Athlete Nutrition Coach HD) has been in great form of late on the road, he had to settle for 4th place today in the title race, some 29 seconds down.
Conor Dooney (Foyle CC) was 5th today, in a time of 10:11, and just 12 seconds off the bronze medal. Adam Matthews (Banbridge CC), who won the Ulster junior hill climb title last month, in a time that would have secured a senior medal, completed the top six today, in a time of 10:014. .
