Eoin Kelly of UCD Cycling Club was best in the main event at the Mondello Series in Co Kildare this evening. He claimed victory from Matteo Cigala (Dan Morrissey-Pactimo) and national criterium champion Conor Murnane (UCD Cycling Club).

Kelly (19) was on the attack for the evening and some clever team work in the finale, plus plenty of firepower from the winner, saw the UCD man get clear solo very late in the contest to take victory.

Working with team mate Murnane, Kelly made several moves off the front after the A1-A2 group caught most of the A3s in the handicapped race. However, while they managed to escape just as the last of the A3s were being recaptured, they were soon caught.

Dubliner Kelly then followed up with a number of attacks, in the hope the other riders would be forced to chase, ensuring Murnane could wait for the sprint. The last of those efforts saw the eventual winner get clear in a three-man group, which also contained junior rider Christopher Marshall (Orwell Wheelers Cycling Club).

However, they too were caught and with just under one lap of racing remaining Murnane let the wheel go, resulting in a small gap opening up for Kelly as he sprinted through the first corner on the course.

Once Kelly got that gap he decided to strike out for the line solo; making it all the way as the group behind sprinted it out for 2nd place; Cigala getting that verdict over Murnane.

In the A4 race Eamon Kirwan (Kildare Cycling Club) won from John Walsh (UCD Cycling Club) and Noel Brannigan (Naas Cycling Club).
