The Mondello Series, promoted by Usher Irish Road Club, made a welcome return this evening after several weeks, with a late four-man breakaway forging clear to share the spoils on the night in Mondello Park, Co Kildare.
While Conn McDunphy (Lucan CRC) was the dominant force on the night, winning the race and winning it well, he was matched for a long time at the pointy end by a first-year junior emerging on the Dublin scene.
Patrick O'Sullivan (Orwell Wheelers) went with McDunphy when he attacked late in the race from the four-man breakaway, which also included Sean Landers (UCD Cycling Club) and Luke Smith (Moynalty CC).
And though McDunphy continued to press hard when he was away with young O'Sullivan, and eventually shook him off to win solo, the junior rider was impressive. He was eventually caught by Smith and Landers, with the trio then battling it out for the final two spots on the podium.
Smith got he verdict for 2nd, with Landers and O'Sullivan finishing just a few lengths behind in 3rd and 4th places respectively. The sprint from the bunch for 5th place was won by Andy Maguire (Team Stafford Bonded) from Conor Murnane (UCD Cycling Club), with Orla Walsh (UCD Cycling Club) best woman on the night.
