Results Limerick road race and hill climb champs | O'Mahony and Luke take golds | Sticky Bottle

Youth rider John O'Mahony (Newcastle West CC) has won the Limerick Road Race Championships, which was run as a handicapped event and decided on points. With 5,3 and 1 points available in a sprint at the end of each lap, O'Mahony went on a charge early in the race and mopped up points.

Run over six laps of an 8km circuit Kilmeedy today, the A1-A2 riders give away 3:30 to the middle group of A3-Masters-Junior-U16 riders, with a further gap of 2:30 to the limit group comprised of women, Masters and A4 riders.

O'Mahony laid the foundation for his eventual race win when he took the first three sprints after a close contest with team mate Gerry Carroll. He then went on to win the fourth sprint, meaning only Carroll could overhaul O'Mahony in the final two sprints.

On the penultimate lap the scratch riders had caught all of those ahead with Joel Luke (UCD Cycling Club), Paul Kennedy (Burren CC) and Damian Culhane (Newcastle West CC) mopping up the points on the line.

And even though there were double points for the final sprint, the fight for gold and silver was still between O'Mahony and Carroll. Youth rider Michael Collins (Newcastle West Cycling Club) went clear on that last lap and took the 10 points, from Joel Luke and Paul Collins. Carroll's fourth place in that final sprint meant he fell one point shy of O'Mahony in the final result; the team mates taking gold and silver with Luke taking bronze.
