Adam Rafferty (Team 31 Jolly Cycles U19) has won the gold medal, and the Irish champion's jersey, in the junior men's TT at the National Road Championships in Dungannon, Co Tyrone, this evening.
The second-year junior, who has been in great form this season against the watch, went to within one second of the Irish junior 10 mile TT record - held by his brother, Darren Rafferty - last week. And he clearly carried that form into today's title race, though it was very tight at the top.
After 31km of racing, Rafferty was just 5.15 seconds faster than runner-up, Liam O'Brien (Fermoy CC); the Cork rider going close to adding a TT title to his junior cyclocross crown. Patrick Casey (Anexo Group Race Team) claimed the bronze, some 12.28 seconds off winner Rafferty.
Seth Dunwoody (Cannibal B Victorious), who had also gone to within one second of Rafferty's junior 10 mile record last week, had to settle for 4th place this evening, some 20.5 seconds down, while Cal Tutty (Dungarvan CC) rounded out the top five at 3:01.
In the junior women's race, Lucy Benezet Minns (Tofauti Active), a UK-based rider who has recently declared for Ireland, put in a fantastic debut ride on the Irish scene by winning gold but a very clear margin.
Aine Doherty (VC Glendale) claimed the bronze medal, some 2:48 down on new champion Benezet Minns. The bronze medal went to Lucy Brown (Phoenix CC), some 6:03 off the winner's time.
Elena Wallace (Harps CC) was 4th at 8:04 while Zoe Lindsay (TC Racing) rounded out the top five on the night at 8:17.
