Jack Ferguson looks absolutely shattered after climbing Divis Mountain to claim victory in the Bobby Crilly Classic atop Divis Mountain (Photos David McVeigh - The Belgian Project)
Teenager Jack Ferguson (Dromara CC) has taken an impressive win in the main event at the Bobby Crilly Classic.
The 18-year-old was out on his own in the main event atop Divis Mountain overlooking Belfast.
He had been part of a strong breakaway that got clear very early in the contest. It consisted of six laps of a circuit before the riders turned to tackle the climb.
The five-man escape had been whittled down to four by the time the climb began. And having gain three minutes on the chasing pack the breakaway men knew they had it won.
With Ferguson were Newry Wheelers men Drew McKinley and Kevin Lynch. Ross Collins from McNally Swords in Dublin completed the quartet.
While the escapees had cooperated well to get their gap and keep it, once the climb began it was every man for himself.
And on the climb up to the finish line it was Ferguson who was strongest. He took victory from Collins and Lynch.
Just behind some of the strongest climbers from the riders who missed the breakaway came through.
Michael McGlynn (Omagh Wheelers) and last year’s junior champion Ethan Downey (Clann Eireann) – two young guns to watch – came through for 4th and 5th.
Breakaway man McKinley may have been caught and passed by that duo, but he held his shape and took 6th on the day.
In the A4 race promoting club Phoenix CC cleaned up. Stuart McCaughey and Stuart Kerr took a 1-2. Michael Stack from St Tiernan’s would round out the podium.
Then came Luke McMullan (Scott Orwell CC), Kevin Keane (St Tiernan’s CC) and another one of the Phoenix men Robert Conn.
